Soft 18 in Blackjack: When to Hit, Stand or Double

Figures checked against the rules of the live table.

Ace-7 adds up to 18, and 18 feels like a hand you stand on. Against half the dealer's upcards that instinct is wrong — sometimes you should double, sometimes you should hit. Soft 18 is the most misplayed hand in blackjack because the right play depends so heavily on what the dealer shows.

The rule

Dealer showsPlay soft 18
2 through 6Double (stand if you can't double)
7 or 8Stand
9, 10 or aceHit

This is for six decks with the dealer hitting soft 17, the game on the Halfonred floor. Against a 2, doubling is a close call that tips toward doubling because the dealer hits soft 17; in games where the dealer stands on soft 17, stand on soft 18 against a 2.

Why 18 is weaker than it looks

Eighteen only beats a dealer who finishes on 17 or busts. A dealer showing 9 most often ends on 19; showing a 10 or an ace, the dealer frequently ends on 20 or 21. Against those cards a standing 18 loses more than it wins.

Why hitting is safe

A soft hand can't bust on one card, because the ace drops from 11 to 1. Take a card on soft 18 and:

  • An ace, 2 or 3 makes 19, 20 or 21 — an improved hand.
  • A 10, jack, queen or king makes hard 18 — the same total you started with.
  • A 4 through 9 makes hard 12 to 17, and you keep playing by the hard-total rules.

Almost a third of the deck leaves you exactly where you were, and nearly a quarter improves you. Against a strong dealer card, that is better than locking in a total that is likely beaten.

Why double against 2 through 6

Against a weak upcard the dealer busts often, so this is a hand where you want more money on the table. Doubling commits you to one card, but the soft hand protects you: no single card busts you, and if the dealer busts you win double whatever you end on.

Stand against 7 or 8

A dealer 7 most often makes 17, which your 18 beats. A dealer 8 most often makes 18, a push. Standing is right in both spots — this is where 18 really is a good hand.

Soft 18 is one row of the complete six-deck basic strategy chart, which covers every other soft hand too.
